Oxford Union President-Elect Removed Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a no-confidence vote that came after his controversial online comments about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against the student leader achieved the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.
Disputed Comments
The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a university in Utah.
According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students seeming to welcome the incident.
Election Results
The vote of confidence was conducted over the recent days, with results announced on Tuesday.
Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in following the Oxford Union's rules.
Election Controversies
Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement categorically refuted that any person acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Ongoing Dispute
The student stated that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.
His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On recently, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.
The message criticized the union of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".
The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had earlier condemned the student's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with the activist at the society in May.
