Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's ODI Team Versus India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from the three-match ODI series against India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a shock selection.
Performance Issues Result in Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the ODI team following being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of 47 in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.
The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes
There have been indications of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a Test return as Australia search for a solution to their top-order woes.
Pace Additions and Fitness Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Schedule
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from October 29.
