Courageous Rail Employee Receives Critical Injuries During Mass Knife Attack on High-Speed Service

A brave railway employee who intervened to save passengers during a multiple stabbing incident on a high-speed train has suffered life-threatening injuries, authorities confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Incident

CCTV footage reportedly shows the staff member trying to stop the attacker as the train journeyed between Peterborough and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with injured passengers running through compartments.

The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Response and Aftermath

The event on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have since been released from medical care.

A bystander filmed the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced police on the station. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, end my life."

“This terrible incident has affected many people. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – particularly the brave member of rail staff whose family are being supported by specialist officers,” said a senior police official.

Union Response and Calls for Measures

Train unions were swift to praise staff and call for more action. A union official stated he would be “requesting immediate meetings with authorities, train companies and police to guarantee that we have the best possible support, tools and robust protocols in operation”.

Another association leader encouraged the train operator and authorities “to move quickly to examine safety, to support the impacted employees, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.

Driver Praised for Quick Thinking

The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by union officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“The driver didn’t halt the service in the center of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to access, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much waiting,” explained a union representative.

Additional Information

Police stated they received the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One observer recounted initially wondering if the situation was a holiday prank, but soon understood from people's faces that it was real.

Authorities have stated there is nothing to suggest the event was a terrorist attack and have asked the community to come forward with any further details.

Train services on the impacted line are expected to have disruption until the following day, with passengers advised to defer their travel where feasible.

Individuals with information that could assist the investigation are asked to reach police by sending a message a designated number with a case code.
